A few days ago I went to Costco and bought: tequila, cat litter, Advil, and Falling Man by Don DeLillo. The novel was $8.99. Was there anything else? Oh yes, contact lens solution. The benign necessities in one's life.

I've begun Falling Man, which confirms the fact that I cannot read anything by Don DeLillo sitting up. I must be prone and the room must be very quiet. I wish he was sitting in the room with me while I was reading. His presence would reassure me, I think. I'd glance up now and then and feel reassured.

A few days ago I also ran into Kevin and asked him where he was going and he said to get a drink so of course I said, Can I come?

He had a Campari with grapefruit juice and I had a icy cold and sour gin gimlet. We talked about books and I told him I got out of my "no book buying" rule by going to the library.

He said the last book he read was from the library too: a biography of Joan of Arc. They were out to get her.

I told him that if you check out a book from the NEW section you have to return it within two weeks, so I got cracking and finished one of mine just in time. He confessed that he returned his late.

He felt guilty, but was pretty sure there wouldn't be a long waiting list of people waiting to check out biographies on persecuted Joan.

We both had a glass of rose then, mine domestic, his French. And then I left. His girlfriend was on her way and I figured I could miss that and how nice it would be for her to walk in and smile at seeing an empty seat next to Kevin, waiting just for her.
